China hit back at US State Secretary, Mike Pompeo on Wednesday over his claims that coronavirus originated in a Wuhan laboratory, saying he “does not have any” evidence.
Pompeo said on Sunday there was “significant evidence” to prove that the latest coronavirus emerged in a laboratory in China, creating more friction with Beijing over its handling of the outbreak.
“I think this matter should be handed over to scientists and medical practitioners, not politicians, who lie for their own domestic political ends,” Hua Chunying, the spokeswoman for the foreign ministry, said at a daily press conference.
Pompeo said in an interview Sunday that there was “significant evidence” that the latest coronavirus came from a Wuhan laboratory.
Many scientists believe the new virus, which appeared late last year in China, has transferred from animals to humans, likely from a Wuhan market selling exotic animals for meat.
The World Health Organization said there were “speculative” reports from the US. (Is)-AFP.
