Chelsea welcome Crystal Palace to Stamford Bridge for the opening day of the 2021/22 Premier League season as Thomas Tuchel will take the reins of his side from the outset for the first time.
The former Paris Saint Germain manager, who took over at Stamford Bridge from Frank Lampard in January, is yet to make his first signing as Chelsea manager despite leading the club to Champions League glory last season.
Upon the German’s appointment in west London, Tuchel inherited several signings which were made under Lampard’s regime, who brought in the likes of Timo Werner and Kai Havertz, along with director Marina Granovskaia and owner Roman Abramovich, who will hope to provide Tuchel with the same financial backing.
The Blues have been heavily linked with the £150million-rated Erling Haaland, Declan Rice and Adama Traore so far this summer – all of whom could feature in Tuchel’s potential starting 11 come August 14 at Stamford Bridge.
Thomas Tuchel Formation – How Chelsea could line up on the opening day.
The Blues reverted to a back three upon Tuchel’s arrival in January, with many of the squad having played a hand in this particular setup under both Frank Lampard and Antonio Conte.
Antonio Rudiger, who like Cesar Azpilicueta featured under Conte in a back three, grew into becoming a mainstay under Tuchel despite failing to break into Lampard’s plans.
The versatility of Chelsea’s number 28 goes without mention, but the Spanish defender showcased his ability to perform at the highest level regardless of where he is on the pitch.
