A young man identified as Sodienye Mbatumukeke has been sentenced to death by a high court in Port Harcourt, Rivers state.
According to Channels TV, Justice I. P. Chigoezi-Igwe on Monday, February 15, handed down the ruling after finding Mbatumukeke guilty on two counts of murder and armed robbery.
He was dragged to court for the murder of a delivery agent, Chukwuma Eleje with an online marketing store in March 2017 after delivering expensive smartphones.
The judge sentenced Mbatumukeke to death by hanging after describing the murder as gruesome.
Mbatumukeke was arrested alongside his friends for the murder, however, his girlfriend Joy Eluwa was released while the suspect went on trial with Divine Excel Naabe.
The presiding judge also explained the sentence will serve as a deterrent to others.
Naabe, the second defendant was however discharged and acquitted of murder and armed robbery. Justice Chigoezi-Igwe said the prosecution team did not present convincing evidence against him.
Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that a teacher in Benue state has been remanded in prison for allegedly murdering three policemen.
The remand order was issued by a magistrates’ court in Makurdi on Tuesday, February 2.
The suspect, Mernyi Christopher, is facing charges of criminal conspiracy, armed robbery, acts of terrorism, and culpable ho*icide.
In a related development, a dismissed constable, Joseph Omotosho, who was attached to the defunct Special Anti-robbery Squad (SARS) of the Edo police command, has been sentenced to death by a state high court in Benin City.
The court on Friday, February 12, found the accused guilty of conspiring with four other police constables to kill a car dealer in 2015.
