Xavier: Nigeria still struggling to replace Okocha

The former AFC Leopards midfielder states that the Super Eagles star had an unrivaled technical skill.

Francis Xavier states that at any given time he will still have Augustine ‘Jay-Jay’ Okocha in his side.

The now 46-year-old former Nigeria international has been a joy to watch at both club and national level throughout his playing days. The former midfielder of AFC Leopards has explained why he’s going to go for the former star of Super Eagles.

“Okocha is one player who has been very influential on the pitch and has been able to create goals as well as score,” Xavier told Goal on Tuesday.

“He was very talented and was able to dribble his way out of trouble at any given time. Another remarkable attribute was his ability to adapt to any given game and have a positive impact on his side.” He was physically fit on most occasions and his tactical ability was on a different level. “The inventive midfielder helped Nigeria win the 1994 Afcon and played a significant role as the team finished second.

“He won numerous individual and group prizes but remained modest and diligent until he retired,” added Xavier.

“Nigeria is also struggling to find a replacement who can contribute to the team regularly and help them reach higher heights.

“Okocha made 75 appearances for the Super Eagles, scoring 14 goals in the process.
