Lionel Messi almost left Barcelona last summer after handing in a transfer request; the 34-year-old had been expected to sign a new five-year contract; his wages were to be reduced by 50 per cent under terms of new deal; PSG are hoping to convince Messi to move to Paris.
Paris Saint-Germain are already making progress in talks to sign Lionel Messi after Barcelona were unable to offer the forward a new contract at the Nou Camp.
The six-time Ballon d’Or winner has officially been a free agent since July 1 after he failed to agree terms over a renewal before his previous Barcelona contract expired on June 30.
However, the 34-year-old had been expected to sign a new five-year contract with the Catalan club, which would have seen his salary reduced by 50 per cent.
But this offer cannot be fulfilled by Barca due to “financial and structural obstacles” and the club’s president Joan Laporta told a press conference on Friday that La Liga rules prevented the club from extending Messi’s stay.
PSG believe they have a good chance of completing a deal and can afford to sign him without breaking any Financial Fair Play rules.
Gianluigi Donnarumma, Sergio Ramos and Georginio Wijnaldum have already arrived at the Parc des Princes on free transfers this summer.
Messi still wants to win trophies and be part of a winning project and the Ligue 1 side can offer him all that.
